Homemade Soft Pretzels

Pretzels or pretzel nuggets

Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp dry active yeast
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 0.6666666666666666 cup baking soda
  • some water
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • some salt

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water, salt, and sugar until combined. Add dry active yeast, and let rest 5 minutes or until yeast starts to foam.
  2. Add flour and oil, and mix thoroughly until a dough forms. Remove the dough and use the remaining oil to cover the bowl.
  3. Cover bowl with plastic wrap, and leave in a warm place for 1 hour.
  4. Cut dough into 8 pieces and roll them out into thin ropes, twisting the two ends to form a pretzel shape. Alternatively, roll each segment into a thin rope and use a bench scraper or knife to cut into nuggets.
  5. Add baking soda to a large pot of water, and bring to a rolling boil. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds per side.
  6. Transfer pretzels to a baking sheet, brush with beaten eggs, and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown.
